Christmas Tree OrnamentsDecorating your Christmas tree is one of the more joyful chores around Christmas time.If you are like a lot of other folks, you have saved special ornaments and decorations over the years and they will bring back happy and sentimental memories at Christmas time. Favorite basics are of course, colored glass balls, tinsel, garlands and twinkling miniature lights. To make your tree special this year, we have some suggestions on how to create your own lovely ornaments for little or no cost. Pine cones are free for the taking. During the autumn, make a trip to the nearest forest and pick up a couple of bags full of small to medium pine cones. Don't worry if they are closed tight. Before you start working with your pine cones, rub off any dirt with a dry cloth. When ready to begin your project, put the dry pine cones on a cookie sheet or in a disposable aluminum pan. Bake them in a slow (225 degrees) oven until they begin to open. Ten to fifteen minutes should do it for small ones. There you are - perfectly proportioned cones. Use just as they are for that natural look or fancy them up. Gold or silver spray paint is simple to apply and transforms your pine cones into original ornaments. If you want to get fancy, put some white glue (such as Elmers) in a shallow saucer and roll the pinecones to get the tips wet. Then roll in glitter. If you have a glue gun, use it to attach a small loop of string or wire to the tops for hanging. You can also use a fine drill bit to make a small hole and superglue the wire loops. This same technique can be applied to decorate walnuts - just don't bake them. If you are lucky enough to find them, you can also use large acorns. The nuts need to be glued into the top otherwise they will fall out. Acorns have a built-in handle so you can eliminate the steps of attaching a loop to the tops. Your finished ornaments can be used in a variety of ways. Attach flat or curly ribbon streamers to the tops. You can also add a bow and use to decorate Christmas gifts. They look pretty as Christmas table decorations when combined with a sprig or two of evergreen or pine branch trim. Use your imagination and have a wonderful Christmas. |
